Ganesha

India, Chola Period (900-13th Century) Medium: bronze Measurements: Overall: 50.2cm Date: 12th century

Gift of Katharine Holden Thayer 1970.62

Ganesha is a Hindu God with an elephant head and a human body. He is one of the most popular gods in the Hindu religion. It is thought that Ganesha helps remove obstacles and brings success to people.

He is often found with his broken tusk in one hand-a reminder of when he broke it off in a rage, throwing it at the man-in-the-moon because he believed the moon was laughing at him.
